The Spartan wrestling team finished 13th out of 22 teams Saturday at Badger State in Madison, Wisc. Wrestling without 220 and 285-pounders and missing Jakob Larson, Brett VonRuden at 106 and 138 for much of the day, the Spartans finished with a point total much lower than what they might normally have accumulated on a different day. Jaden Winchel also sat out the tournament as took the weekend off to get healthy and prepare for Bi-State. Still, there were some impressive finished.
Sophomore Brett VonRuden was disqualified in his first match, which will force him to miss Bi-State as well. 106-pounder Jakob Larson suffered a shoulder injury that also ended his day early, but it appears he will be back before the season ends.
Freshman Jon Bailey finished 3rd losing 3-2 in the semis to last year’s division one state champion Brandon Klein from Stoughton. Klein is currently the top-ranked wrestler at 120 in division one. At 152 pounds, Hayden Krein finished second losing only to West Salem/Bangor’s Devin Bahr–a state champion as a freshman and one of the best pound-for-pound wrestlers in the state. Both Bailey and Krein excelled in one of the toughest brackets at the tournament.
Also placing for the Spartans was David Hayes in 6th and James Gann in 7th while Sam Forbes, Christian Lamon and Austin Zweifel all went 3-1 on the day to earn the consolation championship at their weights. Summarized results are below…
