Collin Gartner (left) led all Spartans at the Ithaca-Weston Invitation going 4-1 and finishing 2nd. Also going 4-1, but finishing 9th was Trygve Zurfluh (center) and Austin Zwiefel (right)
Junior Collin Gartner led 10 Spartans with a second place finish at the Ithaca-Weston Invitational back on January 17th. As a team, the Spartan JV finished 13th out of 16 teams at the varsity tournament. Division three honorable mention Cashton won the tournament with 376 points followed by Iowa-Grant/Highland in second with 353 and La Crosse Logan in third with 353 points. Sparta finished with 224 points.
At 138 pounds, Collin Gartner led all Spartans with a second place finish going 4-1 on the day despite entering the tournament as the 14th seed out of 14 wrestlers. En route to his runner-up finish, Gartner took down #3 seed Zach Mindham (12-6) of Boscobel, #6 seed Brennan Durst (4-6) of Weston/Ithaca, the #2 seed Ben Andersen (17-7) of Cambridge and the #4 seed Gabe Anderson (13-10) of Cashton. His one loss came to the #1 seed Dylan Smith (18-3) of La Crosse Logan. Congrats to Collin on a great day of wrestling.
Trygve Zurfluh and Austin Zwiefel also finished 4-1, but since they each lost their first matches of the day, they could only place as high as 9th and that’s what each did by winning their last four matches.
