In what will go down as a very memorable Regional, the Spartan wrestling team came up 6.5 points shy of moving on to the team sectional. Mauston won the team championship in a closely contested event all day long.

In was a matter of several factors combining to give Masuton the victory over the favorite Spartans. First and foremost, Mauston wrestled very well and deserved to win the title. The same can be said of the Spartans. There was no lack of effort or disappointing performances in any of our wrestlers. Mauston won the tournament in the second round when they won four matches by coming from behind in the final 30 seconds. Key among those was a controversial win at 160 over Greg Skon. The Mauston wrestler was awarded a TD on the edge of the mat with 4 seconds left when Skon appeared to still have a whizzer in. To say the officiating was sub par would be accurate, but at the same time it was the same for all the wrestlers and teams.
In the end, Mauston won more matches they weren’t supposed to win than Sparta did, and that was the difference.
Attention now turns to Sectional action next Saturday at Richland Center. Good luck to the following wrestlers as they continue their quest to the State Tournament.
