UPDATED: Sparta downs Logan 39-32

Sparta improved to 3-0 in the MVC and 8-1 overall by defeating La Crosse Logan 39-32 Thursday evening in La Crosse.  I don't have box scores or individual match scores at this time, but should tomorrow morning so check back then for a full update.

UPDATED:  The Spartans and the Rangers each won seven matches Thursday night, but the difference came in how the Spartans got their wins.  Six of the seven Spartan victories on the night came by pin or forfeit as the Spartans edged out the Rangers 39-32.  Logan picked up three pins on the night and two major decisions, but were unable to pick up the extra points to bring the match any closer.

Sparta jumped out to a 21-9 lead after Matt Tourdot picked up a quick pin at 285 pounds.  The Rangers were determined to get back into the match winning the next three matches–two by major decision to bring the score to 21-20.  That's when Sparta and Logan traded pins through the next four weight classes to put the Spartans up 33-32 heading into the final match at 145 pounds.  I'm not sure if Logan simply had no wrestlers at 145 pounds, but they forfeited the match giving Sparta the MVC victory.

Meanwhile, La Crosse Central defeated Onalaska 54-24 in a dual that featured only three actual matches due to forfeits at various weights.  The first 11 matches on the night were forfeits while the three weight classes that did see wrestling only saw 8 minutes and 49 seconds of action as all ended with pins.  Former Spartan coach Lyle Blum continues to coach for Onalaska.

Next up, the Spartans head to Lancaster for the Lancaster Tournament while the JV treks over to Mauston for a tournament of their own.  We will try to get results from both tournaments up here on Spartanwrestling.com Saturday night.  If they aren't up then, check back Sunday.
