Each year, we try to do a scouting report of Tomah before the big dual. This year is no different. Below is a snapshot of how each of Tomah’s varsity wrestlers did at a few tournaments this year. It’s not a complete picture, but it should give an idea of where we can expect their wrestlers to possibly move around during the dual with Sparta. We’ll also discuss any previous matchups between wrestlers likely to faceoff Tuesday night. Let’s kick if off!
103 — Here we have one of Tomah’s better wrestlers in Tanner Dworak. The sophomore has racked up a record of 24-4 as of two weeks ago. Dworak was 2nd at the Tomah Scramble, 3rd at Bi-State, 1st at Nekoosa and 5-0 at the Wausau East Duals. We could also see Patrick Adler, the younger brother of Tomah’s Zurik Adler.

112 — Zurik Adler has held down this weight for most of the past few seasons in Tomah. He had a record of 24-4 as of two weeks ago. On the season, Adler placed 1st at the Tomah Scramble, 7th at Bi-State, 1st at the Nekossa Invite and 4-1 at the Wausau East Duals. Zurik lost a very entertaining match last year against Adam Wiedl in Sparta. Adler got his revenge at regionals beating Weidl 12-10. We could also see Tanner Dworak or Skylar McCarthy at this weight class. Against Holmen, Zurik Adler moved all the way up to 125.
119 — Here Skylar McCarthy has been the mainstay. McCarthy placed 7th at the Tomah Scramble, did not place at Bi-State, 6th at the Nekoosa Invite while going 4-1 between the 112 and 119 pound weight classes at the Wausau East Duals. McCarthy has wrestled 112, 119 and 125 pounds this year. With Adler having wrestled 125 pounds against Holmen, he could also show up at this weight class. Through the Nekoosa Invite two weeks ago, McCarthy had an 8-15 record.
125/130 — These weights have been in flux for Tomah this year with guys moving up, down, in, out and around. The three likely guys to show up at these weights are Damion Reekie, Nathan Jacco and Mike Linehan. Reekie placed 3rd at the Tomah Scramble (125), did not place at Bi-State (125), 2nd at the Nekoosa Invite (125) while going 5-0 at the Wausau East Duals (130). Jacco did not place at the Nekoosa Invite (125) while going 1-4 at the Wausau East Duals (125). Linehan was 4th at the Tomah Scramble (130), did not place at Bi-State (130) and did not wrestle at the Nekoosa Invite or Wausau East Duals. Last year he defeated Derek VonRuden by fall in 3:31 at 119 pounds during the dual in Sparta. At the end of the Nekoosa Invite Jacco was 0-3 and Reekie was 13-8 on the year.

135 — This weight has belonged to Derrick Scott for most of the year. Scott placed 6th at the Tomah Scramble, 11th at Bi-State, 2nd at the Nekoosa Invite while going 4-1 at the Wausau East Duals. Scott pinned Logan Denasha last year at this same weight class in 3:03. Scott had a record of 19-9 through the Nekoosa Invite.
140 — Joey Organ has owned this spot for most of the year and had a record of 24-5 as of two weeks ago. Organ placed 3rd at the Tomah Scramble, 5th at Bi-State and 3rd at the Nekoosa Invite while going 5-0 at the Wausau East duals. Organ upset Jordan Stanek last year at 152 pounds by a score of 4-1. Along with Tanner Dworak and Zurik Adler, Organ is one of the better wrestlers for Tomah. Jacob Dubord has also wrestled at this weight for Tomah.
145 — This weight has belonged to Jacob Dubord for the most part. Dubord placed 6th at the Tomah Scramble, did not place at Bi-State (152) and did not wrestle at Nekoosa while going 5-0 at the Wausau East duals. Tyler VonHaden has also made an appearance here, but Dubord appears to be the guy for this weight class.
152 — Connor Genrich has been at this weight class only recently. In many of the tournaments, he wrestled at 160 pounds, but the last three MVC duals, Genrich has been wrestling here so we’ll give him this spot. Genrich did not wrestle at the Tomah Scramble, did not place at Bi-State (160) and placed 6th at the Nekoosa Invite while going 0-4 at the Wausau East Duals (160). As of two weeks ago, he had a record of 2-7. During last year’s dual against Sparta, he lost 14-4 to Morgan Leis. It would not be a surprise at all for him to move up to 160 pounds. Tyler VonHaden has also wrestled at this weight class.
160 — Tyler VonHaden has wrestled here in recent weeks so we are going to suggest this is his weight class. Earlier in the year he wrestled at 145 and 152 pounds so he could make an appearance at 145, 152 or 160 but recent results suggest 160 pounds. At the Tomah Scramble, he placed 3rd (152), 7th at Bi-State (145) and 1st at the Nekoosa Invite (152) while going 4-1 at the Wausau East Duals (152). As of two weeks ago, his record was 24-5. Last year defeated Derek McDonald 12-8 at 130 pounds after McDonald moved up three weight classes from 112, which probably made the difference. Connor Genrich could also make an appearance here.
171 — This weight has belonged to Ross Lynch. Ross placed 7th at the Tomah Scramble, did not place at Bi-State and at the Nekoosa Invite placed 3rd while going 2-3 at the Wausau East Duals. As of two weeks ago, Lynch’s record was 16-8. Last year against Sparta, Brandon Brueggen defeated Lynch by a score of 6-4.
189/215 — Josh VonHaden and Mike VonHaden have held down these weight classes all year. Mike VonHaden placed 4th at the Tomah Scramble (215), did not place at Bi-State (215) and placed 5th at the Nekoosa Invite (215) while going 3-2 at the Wausau East Duals (215). As of two weeks ago, he had a record of 9-13. Josh VonHaden did not wrestle at the Tomah Scramble, did not place at Bi-State or the Nekoosa Invite and went 2-3 at the Wausau East Duals all at 189 pounds. While Mike has primarily wrestled at 215 and Josh at 189, the two could be interchangeable. We could also see Devin L’Herault here who placed 4th at 285 at the Tomah Scramble.
285 — This has been a crapshoot all year long for Tomah with the Timberwolves trying out multiple guys at this weight class with some having little or no wrestling experience. The two likely candidates here are Lucas Stromberg-Windau or Devin L’Herault. Dylan Griffin and Justin Plevell have also made appearances here. Because of the dynamic nature of this weight class for Tomah, I won’t get into all the records for each tournament, but it is one of the question marks in Tomah’s lineup, which is odd to say after four years of Josh VanGundy.

Sparta’s lineup this year reminds me of the Tomah lineups from the past few years, which are solid wrestlers up and down the lineup and no really weak holes. Tomah has a few holes this year, but still retain a number of very good wrestlers. Here is a very basic breakdown of the above information…

As always, things change and guys who have not even wrestled a varsity match all year could make their debut Tuesday evening. And records always seem to mean nothing when these two teams meet.
