Stevens Point Dual Tournament Update

7:38 pm —  The Spartan fan base is coming out in force!  Thanks to Pat Stevenson, Mary Wiedl and Mary Leis, we have some more definitive updates on how the day went for individuals.  Going 5-0 on the day were Matt Tourdot, Morgan Leis, Jordan Stanek and Adam Wiedl.  Thanks for the updates!

5:47 pm —  Sparta won its third tournament of the year and improved their dual record to 14-0 by leveling Sussex Hamilton 41-19 in the finals of the Stevens Point Dual Tournament.  Matt Tourdot, Jordan Stanek and Steve Stevenson picked up pins in the championship for the Spartans as they completed a day where they went 5-0 in duals.  Adam Wiedl also had a monster day going 5-0 with four pins and a tech fall.

Check back here later for full individual results and congrats to the Spartans on another fine day of wrestling.  And a big thanks to Pat Stevenson who provided updates throughout the day.

3:20 pm —  Sparta has advanced to face Hamilton Sussex in the championship match of the Stevens Point dual tournament.  Sparta went 4-0 in the early rounds to advance.  The Spartan’s toughest test came against division three Cadott (No. 6 ranking according to Crossface, No. 9 according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online).  The Spartans won that dual 35-30.  Here are all the results…

  • Sparta 53 – Manitowoc 12
  • Sparta 35 – Cadott 30
  • Sparta 36 – DC Everest 22
  • Sparta 63 – Kimberly 9

I still don’t have too much in the way of individual results, but I do know Matt Tourdot went 4-0, Tom Tourdot went 1-3 and Steve Stevenson went 3-1.  With the unorthodox way the duals were wrestled, it’s a bit more difficult to compile all the results, but we will have those up here eventually.  Manitowoc also received votes in the Crossface rankings for division one.

Hamilton Sussex is located in the Milwaukee suburbs in the city of Sussex.  They aren’t receiving any votes in either rankings, but it’s a school with a wrestling reputation or at least one that rings familiar from good teams or outstanding individuals over the years.  Check back later for results from Sparta’s championship match…

1:41 pm —  Thanks to Pat Stevenson, we have some updates on how the Spartans are doing in Stevens Point.  This is a different type of dual tournament as it’s not straight team vs. team, but it is.  Let me try to explain.  Teams face off in duals, but I don’t think it’s like where both teams meet on the same mat and they go back and forth.  It sounds like a guy from Sparta could be wrestling a kid from Stevens Point on one mat and then two mats over another match between a kid from Sparta and Stevens Point could be taking place.  There is probably a more simple explanation than that, but I really don’t get it.  Basically, the teams wrestle four duals and then the top two teams face off in the championship.

As such, we have partial scores from all four duals the Spartans are wrestling in at this time.  Here they are…

  • Sparta 46 – Manitowoc 3, six matches remaining
  • Sparta 26 – Cadott 15, five matches remaining
  • Sparta 28 – DC Everest 21, three matches remaining
  • Sparta 42 – Kimberly 3, five matches remaining

As you can see, the Spartans are sitting pretty right now.  If they take care of business in the dual against DC Everest then they will likely be in the championship.  I don’t have full results for the individuals, but Pat was nice enough to let me know that Matt Tourdot, Adam Wiedl, Jordan Stanek and his son Steve Stevenson are all 2-0 on the day.  Brandon Rickert is 2-1.  There may be more undefeated Spartans, but I’ll try to get that later.  Check back here later to see if Sparta advanced to the championship match.
