VanTassel (left) and Winchel (right) had big wins for the Spartans Thursday night.
The Spartans are 3-0 in the MVC after a 40-33 victory Thursday evening at Aquinas. Sparta won eight matches to Aquinas’ six and none may have been larger than freshman Jaden Winchel’s victory over Jordan Corcoran at 132. Corcoran was a 1st team All-MVC wrestler at 126 last year and is currently ranked 7th in D3 at 138 according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online. It was a match that Aquinas likely expected to win, but the freshman Winchel continues to impress during his freshman campaign and this may have been his biggest victory yet.
The Spartans were down 19-27 with five matches to go before winning four straight matches starting at 126. Winchel’s victory over Corcoran was sandwiched between pins by John Roddick, Brock Polhamus and Jaden’s brother Dylan at 135. The four wins gave Sparta a 40-27 edge and clinched the dual. You could say this dual hinged on two matches when it was all said and done. Logan VanTassel’s one-point victory at 160 and Winchel’s overtime victory at 138 may have been the difference. If both those matches go Aquinas’ way, the Blugolds win. The importance of winning these close matches and picking up bonus points like they did in their four match streak that clinched the dual will be of paramount importance when the Spartans wrestle Holmen on Thursday.
