Spartan JV squad wins Baraboo JV Classic by 0.5 points over Stoughton

The Spartan JV squad sent 11 wrestlers to the finals and saw six finish as champions en route to a half-point victory over Stoughton this past weekend at the Baraboo JV Classic.  Kole Nelson, Matt Fahning, Josiah Scott, Ryan Wisnieski, Justin Marx and Nic Swiatly all finished first while Russell Winchel, Kobe Culpitt, Austin Zweifel, Brady Hansen and Andrew Novy all finished second.

On the team side, the Spartans edged out Stoughton by the thinnest of margins–just a half point-137.5-137.  There was a gulf between Sparta, Stoughton and the rest of the competition with Hamilton finishing in third with 106 points.  Team scores are as follows:

You read the correctly.  Sparta’s JV outscored rival Tomah by 103.5 points.  Power in numbers, folks.  You’re beginning to see what a powerful youth and middle school program is doing for the Spartan wrestling team.  While the varsity may be struggling to find wrestlers for some of its upper weights, that problem should be remedied in years to come as some very talented middle school classes with accomplished wrestlers at all weight levels make their way up to the high school.  Meanwhile, the JV squad will continue to push the varsity and work toward cracking the lineup.  Just remember that there were guys who spent years on JV like Dan Dawley last year who put together an incredible senior season and qualified for state.  You are seeing that talent play out at the JV level with many young wrestlers seeing success.
