Leading the way for the Spartans was freshman Jon Bailey who took home the 106-pound title with yet another victory over River Valley’s Zach Licht. Licht of River Valley is 19-4 on the season with three losses to Bailey (Ellsworth Invite, Battle on the Bay and Bi-State). Bailey won the championship match by injury default, but was up 7-1 before Licht bowed out due to injury. The championship by Bailey is the first Bi-State title taken home by a Spartan freshman and is the first championship by a Spartan since Jared Rickert in 2006. Sparta had not been to Bi-State since the 2007 season.
Bailey wasn’t the only Spartan wrestling for a championship Saturday evening. At 152 pounds, sophomore Hayden Krein faced off with West Salem/Bangor’s Devin Bahr for the second time in two weeks. Bahr remained undefeated on the season with a 13-5 victory. Krein had an impressive run to the finals with victories in 59 seconds, 79 seconds, an 8-0 major decision and another pin in 62 seconds in the semis. Krein is now 18-3 on the year with two of his losses coming at the hands of Bahr, who has won 94 of 95 matches during his high school career. The one loss came at last year’s Bi-State when he injured his knee and could not continue.
At 145 pounds, Jaden Winchel advanced to the semis before dropping a decision to Mauston’s John Maki 5-3. Winchel rebounded with a 7-3 decision over 4th-ranked Matt Koski of Hudson and a 3-0 victory over 3rd-ranked Anders Lantz of Ellsworth.
Rounding out the placewinners for Sparta was an 11th place finish by Collin Gartner who had a busy weekend wrestling eight times and going 5-3 in the process with two pins.
This was a solid finish for an incomplete Spartans team. While Sparta did finish behind Holmen, I wouldn’t look too much into that as Sparta can expect Brett VonRuden, Ryan Wisniewski and Jakob Larsen to return after the new year. Additionally, while David Hayes did not place, he was pounding La Crosse Central’s Jacob Obert (15-6) before getting pinned.
