Spartans defeat Central, place 5th at Sparta Invite

Krein was voted tournament MVP with dominating victories over three ranked wrestlers.

Krein was voted tournament MVP with dominating victories over three ranked wrestlers.

The Spartan wrestling team had a busy week with an MVC dual at home against La Crosse Central followed by their own invite two days later.  On Thursday, they won their 11th dual in a row against Central with a 45-29 victory that came without three state qualifiers in Christian Lamon, Brett VonRuden, Jaden Winchel and Hayden Krein.  Still, Spartan reserves stepped in and picked up victories at a variety of weights.  Seth Boland picked up a forfeit victory at 113, Sam Forbes had a close victory at 126 and Joe Lopez stepped in with a pin at 138.

Spartans take 5th at Sparta Invitational

Two days later, the Spartans headed over to Meadowview Middle School for the 2016 edition of the Sparta Invite.  Wrestling with only 11 guys, the Spartans placed fifth behind champions Spring Valley/Elmwood (ranked 5th D3), Eau Claire North, Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal (ranked 12th D2) and Iowa-Grant/Highland (HM D3).  Had the Spartans seen Christian Lamon competing at the tournament, the state qualifier’s presence likely would have tipped the scales enough to boost Sparta into 2nd place, but it would not have been enough to reach Spring Valley/Elmwood who finished 61 points ahead of second place Eau Claire North.  The gap between 2nd place and 5th place Sparta was only 13 points.  MVC rivals Holmen finished 8th with 96 points.

Von Ruden was Sparta's other champion.

Von Ruden was Sparta’s other champion.

Leading the way for Sparta was Brett VonRuden and Hayden Krein who both finished first.  Krein was named the tournament’s MVP after going 4-0 on the day with two pins and two major decisions.  His 9-0 victory over Spring Valley/Elmwood’s Cruze Hurlburt in the championship was against last year’s division three state runner-up.  In the semis, Krein won 10-2 against Will Gahnz of DeForest (23-6) and in the quarterfinals pinned a very tough Cole Clark of Adams-Friendship in 4:40.  Both Gahnz (D1) and Clark (D2) are ranked seventh in their divisions.  Krein had an impressive day in arguably the toughest bracket in the tournament.

At 138 pounds, Brett Von Ruden went 4-0 en route to the championship.  In the finals, he defeated Spring Valley/Elmwood’s Logan Newton (ranked 11th in D3) 3-1 to earn the title.

Advancing to the championship, but placing second was Jaden Winchel.  In the semifinal match, Winhcel dispatched what might be Holmen’s best wrestler in Kalyn Jahn 3-0.  Then it was time for a rematch with Mauston’s John Maki, but it was Maki who would get the upper hand for the second time this season with a 6-4 victory in the finals.  Of Winchel’s three losses this season, two are to Maki and the third is to Hunter Marko.

Jon Bailey placed third at 113 pounds in another stacked bracket.  The freshman breezed through his first two matches with pins in 31 seconds and 2:40 to advance to the semis where Eau Claire North’s Mason Phillips and his 27-0 record were waiting.  Bailey pushed last year’s 106-pound division one fifth place finished to the brink, but fell 4-3.  Bailey pinned Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal’s Skylar Barth (26-3) in 3:32 in the 3rd place match.  Bailey wrestled incredibly well in a very tough weight class considering he is probably going to drop down to 106 for the tournament season.  It’s not easy giving up that much weight in the smaller weight classes to guys who are cutting from much heavier weights.

Also placing for the Spartans was Sam Forbes in 6th place, Brady Hansen in 8th place and Jack Ruedy in 8th place.

Here are some of the Spartan’s big wins on Saturday…
