The Spartan Wrestling Team fought down to the wire for the Regional Championship and the chance to head back to Team Sectionals but came up 6.5 points short to West Salem/Bangor. Seven Sparta wrestlers will advance to Individual Sectional action next Saturday and a chance to qualify for State. Freshman Christian Lamon won the 113 pound title convincingly with a pin in 1:21 (check out the tight spladle in the slightly out of focus picture); John Roddick won the 126 pound title with a 4-0 decision; at 132 Jaden Winchel finished 2nd to undefeated Devon Bahr; Brock Polhamus ruled the 138 pound class, cruising to a 5-0 decision in the finals; Dylan Winchel lost a heartbreaker in the last seconds to finish 2nd at 145; Logan VanTassel finished 2nd at 160; and at 220 Logan Degenhardt pinned his way to a championship.
It was not a matter of what the Spartans didn’t do so much as it was what West Salem/Bangor did to win it. WSB was able to win their close matches and get bonus pins throughout the day.
