Sparta rolls Aquinas, Tomah cruises

Jordan Stanek pinned Aquinas' pinned Joey Franckson in the first period Thursday evening. Here, he finishes off his opponent from Logan back in December.

Looks like it might come down to Sparta-Tomah again for the fourth straight year to determine the MVC champion.  As predicted, Sparta had no problem with Aquinas Thursday evening.  The Spartans picked up five pins along with three victories by forfeit as part of 12 straight wins during the dual en route to a 61-12 MVC victory in La Crosse.  What I did not predict was the margin of victory Tomah had over Holmen.  The Timberwolves crushed the Vikings 51-22 picking up five wins by pin and three matches by major decision or tech fall to improve to 3-0 in the MVC.

Here are more in-depth results for the Spartans’ match against the Blugolds…

FINAL:  Sparta 61 – Aquinas 12

==========

The win improves Sparta’s record to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the MVC.  The score could have been much worse for the Bluegolds.  Sparta was resting a number of its wrestlers while three JV wrestlers in Michael Murnane, Margo Degenhardt and Jacob Denton saw varsity action.

Tomah’s victory over Holmen keeps the Timberwolves on pace with the Spartans and sets up a February 2nd match in Tomah that will likely determine the MVC champion.  I wasn’t at the Tomah-Holmen dual so I can’t say what happened to the Vikings whether they got caught in a couple of matches or the matchups just weren’t there for Holmen, but as it always seems to play out, the Tomah-Sparta dual once again will play out with an MVC championship banner on the line.  If anyone who was at the Tomah-Holmen dual would like to weigh in, please do so by leaving a comment.
