Sparta prepares for Aquinas

Sparta will wrestle its third conference match of the 2009-10 season Thursday evening at La Crosse Aquinas.  Aquinas enters the dual against the Spartans fresh off a 40-30 victory over La Crosse Logan one week ago.  Judging by Sparta’s score against Logan earlier this year, I would suspect Sparta should not have a problem with the Blugolds.

Aquinas (2-6 overall, 1-2 MVC) currently sit in fifth place in the conference ahead of Logan (0-2) and Onalaska (0-3).  Sparta and Tomah continue to own the top of the conference with records of 2-0 while Central and Holmen share 2-1 records.  For the last three years, Tomah has finished first in the MVC while Sparta finished second.

Tomorrow could be a historical night in MVC wrestling history.  Tomah has not lost a conference match since the 2003-04 season and they might just lose one tomorrow evening against Holmen.  Tomah squeaked by Central 33-30 last week and I would suspect Holmen to be a stronger team this year.  If Sparta takes care of business tomorrow evening and Holmen beats Tomah then the Spartans could clinch a share of the MVC title against Central on January 28th in Sparta.  That’s assuming the Spartans beat Onalaska and that is something they have done every year for the last 20 years since the conference began.

Back to tomorrow night’s match against Aquinas.  Here are some records for Aquinas wrestlers coming off the Lee Griffin Invite this past weekend…

135  —  John Paul Soldner  —  13-7
145  —  Kilian Gordon  —  16-5
152  —  Danny Mullaney  —  7-13
160  —  Zach Kammel  —  9-8
171  —  Jimmy Coady  —  13-6
189  —  Joey Franckson  —  3-9
215  —  Lucas Shappell  —  11-5
285  —  Tommy Fuller  —  1-8

Trackwrestling did not list wrestlers for Aquinas at the other weight classes so this is all we have for records as of last weekend.

Be sure to check back here tomorrow night for results from the dual against Aquinas as well as Holmen’s showdown with Tomah.
