Looks like it might come down to Sparta-Tomah again for the fourth straight year to determine the MVC champion. As predicted, Sparta had no problem with Aquinas Thursday evening. The Spartans picked up five pins along with three victories by forfeit as part of 12 straight wins during the dual en route to a 61-12 MVC victory in La Crosse. What I did not predict was the margin of victory Tomah had over Holmen. The Timberwolves crushed the Vikings 51-22 picking up five wins by pin and three matches by major decision or tech fall to improve to 3-0 in the MVC.
Here are more in-depth results for the Spartans’ match against the Blugolds…

FINAL: Sparta 61 – Aquinas 12
==========
The win improves Sparta’s record to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the MVC. The score could have been much worse for the Bluegolds. Sparta was resting a number of its wrestlers while three JV wrestlers in Michael Murnane, Margo Degenhardt and Jacob Denton saw varsity action.
Tomah’s victory over Holmen keeps the Timberwolves on pace with the Spartans and sets up a February 2nd match in Tomah that will likely determine the MVC champion. I wasn’t at the Tomah-Holmen dual so I can’t say what happened to the Vikings whether they got caught in a couple of matches or the matchups just weren’t there for Holmen, but as it always seems to play out, the Tomah-Sparta dual once again will play out with an MVC championship banner on the line. If anyone who was at the Tomah-Holmen dual would like to weigh in, please do so by leaving a comment.

Derek,
Looks like you may have to update your power rankings !
They’ve been updated!
Shawn and I went to the Tomah/Holmen dual last night. The Holmen line up was in disarray. The 103, 140, and 189 out of the line up. Tomah still would have won the dual…but it may have been more competitive. The forfeit at 103 really gave Tomah the edge on matchups in the lower weights. They moved Z. Adler all the wat to 125. The match with Schank was very close, but Schank dis not match the intensity that Adler brought. If I had to point to one factor it was the intensity that Tomah brought. Holmen did not match the intensity and got overwhelmed in a couple of matches that might have otherwise been close.
Thanks Larry! When I first saw the score, I figured something had to be up.
From 125 to 145 Tomah rolled off 5 wins in a row 4 with bonus, and this really created the momentum. Tomah was able to keep a few kids off the mat and keep Holmen from getting any momentum.
Holmen had to sit three of there varsity wrestlers for various reasons. At 189, Fiers had a skin condition. At 140, Westphal was out due to suffering a concussion earlier in the week. At 103, Hackett broke a finger and may be out the rest of the season. From what I heard, Holmen not only were dealing with trying to adequately substitute, but they were trying to match Bennet with Adler, but failed to see Adler bumping up to 125. At 130, they decided to give freshman Niccum more varsity experience, but that failed also. All in all, Holmen wasn’t at their best, which was too bad, cause it would have been neat to see what their best line-up would have looked like up against Tomah.
