Sparta cracked the rankings for the first time this year earning 9th place in Division One. The ranking puts Sparta ahead of conference rival Tomah who actually dropped two spots from 8th in the last poll. The rankings, released January 23 by Wiwrestling.com, are Sparta’s debut in the polls. In the last poll, Sparta did not even garner an honorable mention but that now seems to be rectified. Full rankings for Division One can be found below:
1. Wisconsin Rapids
2. Kaukana
3. Wausau West
4. Stoughton
5. Mukwanago
6. Stevens Point
7. Hortonville
8. Marshfield
9. SPARTA
10. Tomah
Also, be sure to check out the old school wrestling photos from the 1970s brought to you by Spartan alum Rick Brohmer. Links and information about those photos can be found below.
Derek, thank you for exhibiting the wrestling pictures of the 1970 era. It means so much to the many wrestlers, coaches and cheerleaders who supported our sport in this era. Your 1970’s exhibit is a nice edition following Pats work of the 60’s. Hopefully, we will be able to complete the 80’s and 90 in the near future. It would be nice to see names and photo’s of wrestlers like Beanie Helgesen, Paul Hirsch, Scott & Kelly Rickert, J.R. Treharne and the Smith Brother who wrestled so well for Sparta. Coaches like Anton Poskie, Fred Tichenor, Roger Wojcheck, Bud Breslin, Chris Curtis, Scott Zurfluh and Mike Montgomery. Thanks again for making this possible.
