Sparta off to strong start in Missouri

The Sparta Spartan wrestling team went 33-9 during the first day of action in Missouri. The record includes wins by byes, but taking those away the Spartans still went 24-9.  A number of wrestlers are off to 3-0 starts including Adam Wiedl, Toby Mosley, Derek VonRuden, Tom Tourdot, Jordan Stanek and Matt Tourdot.  Nick Winchel, Logan Denasha, Morgan Leis, Brandon Brueggen and Steven Stevenson are all 2-1 while Bryce Nowaczyk and Nick Anderson are 2-2.  On a team basis, Sparta finds itself in 2nd place out of 37 teams with 119.5 points behind leader Kirksville with 138 points.  Sparta will need their undefeated wrestlers to cash in some championships and for the rest of the team to keep picking up the wins to catch Kirksville.

Kirksville is currently the top ranked team in Class 2 of the Missouri rankings and has eight wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes in the state–two of which hold the top ranking.  Sparta has a tough team on its hands, but they are staying with them through day one.  Tomorrow is when a majority of the matches will be wrestled.  Each wrestler is guaranteed between seven and nine matches at this tournament so we aren’t even half way through the wrestling for most of Sparta’s team.

I’ll be providing a full update late tomorrow night or early Sunday morning on how the team did overall.  I’m also going to try to update everyone in the middle of the afternoon on how the team is doing.  That being said, you can find out up-to-the-minute results on Trackwrestling.com.  Just search for the Harrisonville Christmas Tournament.
