Sparta finishes 3rd in Harrisonville

Sparta’s Matt Tourdot won his weight bracket and nine others Spartans finished in the top 10 of their weight bracket in the 37-team tournament Friday and Saturday in Harrisonville to boost Sparta to a 3rd place overall team finish with 727 points.  The Spartans were 183.5 points back of champion Kirksville who currently own the top ranking in the Missouri Class AA rankings.  Between Kirksville and Sparta and finishing second was Seneca with 869.5 points.  The Spartans were able to maintain their hold on third place by finishing just 7.5 points ahead of Brookfield.  The 7.5 points was a smaller margin than what it sounds like in a tournament where points were plentiful.

Matt Tourdot didn’t see much action until the finals.  In his six matches before reaching the finals, Tourdot never made it out of the first period going as far as 1:35 in the semifinals.  In the finals, he met 24-0 Devin Snow of Pleasant Hill who came into the tournament as the top-ranked wrestlers in Missouri’s Class AA.  That didn’t matter to Tourdot as he shutuout Snow 4-0 in the finals to cap off an 8-0 weekend that included six first period pins.

At 189 pounds, Jordan Stanek finished 3rd going 7-1 over two days.  Other high finishers for the Spartans included Adam Wiedl (4th), Nick Winchel (9th), Toby Mosley (4th), Derek VonRuden (6th), Morgan Leis (9th), Tom Tourdot (6th), Brandon Brueggen (8th) and Steven Stevenson (8th).  Stevenson was in a weight bracket that included eight state qualifiers from a year ago so his finish is all the more impressive.

Check out full records, places and other stats for the tournament below.  Match-by-match results for every wrestler are available here as well.

Next up for Sparta is the Badger State Invite in Madison on Wednesday, December 23rd.  The invite, hosted by the 8th ranked Stoughton Vikings, will be the final dual before Christmas and should feature a good and tough variety of in-state competition that the Spartans don’t normally see.
