Midway through the second day of competition, Sparta is a solid third with 679 points. Leading the tournament is Deer Creek with 724.5 points and in second isKirksville with 716. Grain Valley is fourth with 623.5 points while Smithville is a distant fifth with 583 points.
On the individual side, Tristan Zurfluh (6-0), Derek VonRuden (6-0) and Kyle Burkhalter (6-0) are Sparta’s remaining unbeaten wrestlers. All three are in the semifinals. Dylan Winchel (6-1) is Sparta lone one loss wrestler falling in the semifinals 9-4 to KC Center’s DeAndre White (21-1).
Through seven rounds of wrestling, Spartan wrestlers have the following records: Dylan Winchel 6-1, John Roddick, 5-2, Brock Polhamus 4-2, Tristan Zurfluh 6-0, Julius Julson 1-6, Derek VonRuden 6-0, Michael Murnane 4-2, Toby Mosley, 4-2, Robert Ragan 5-2, Greg Skon 3-3, Kyle Burkhalter 6-0, Daniel Dawley 4-2, Logan Degenhardt 3-3 and Chris Beeler 4-2.
Some notable victories for the Spartans so far on day two include John Roddick defeating Osage’s Chris Johnson (14-5) by a 12-3 score, Brock Polhamus defeating Richmond’s Diego Sallindia (11-2) by a score of 9-4, Tristan Zurfluh winning 5-4 against Marshall’s Brandon Standley (18-2), Derek VonRuden pinning Clinton’s Josh Ryun in 5:50, Robert Ragain pulling out a 9-7 victory over Pleasant Hill’s Kolin Rogers (15-7) and Kyle Burkhalter winning by 15-0 technical fall over Mexico’s Payton Turner (13-5).
Sparta also sent a couple of JV wrestlers to the tournament in Paul Vantassel and Margo Degenhardt. Margo is 2-4 on the day while Vantassel is 4-2. Check back later tonight for final results!
