A history of Sparta Wrestling…

Since starting Spartanwrestling.com, it has been my goal to capture as much of the history of Spartan Wrestling as possible.  Whether it be individual season stats or a running history of the programs all-time dual record, no stat or piece of information was considered too small or insignificant to find a place here on Spartanwrestling.com.

I’m excited to bring you the conclusion of a long project I have been working on.  Over the past six months, I have scanned every single wrestling page in all the Spartan yearbooks dating back to when the program first appeared in the yearbooks of Sparta High School.  Now, for the first time, you can see every single one of those pages in a single place.  Below is a 164-page document with every yearbook page since the program started in 1958-59.  Find everything from a young Joel Konze looking like today’s Joel Konze to dual meet scores from the 1950s and more.  It’s a pretty cool thing to look through if you have some time and will be sure to answer some questions about the program’s history.

While I say conclusion above, this is really just the beginning of a larger project I hope to have up by the end of the year.  With the help of these yearbooks and other historical information we have gathered, we should be able to create another document with all-time records against various opponents.  For example, wouldn’t you like to know who holds the edge in the all-time series between Sparta and Tomah?  With this information, we will be able to provide that and more.

The document below is best viewed in full-screen mode so you can make out the writing.  While you can view all the yearbooks here, future posts will push this one off the front page so we have created a permanent page where you can view them.  Under  “Stats & Records” above, you will see an option called “Spartan Yearbooks.”  There will be a permanent place for this project.  The on-screen version on the permanent page will also be slightly larger, but again, these yearbook pages are best viewed in full-screen mode.

On the permanent page, comments are encouraged.  Lastly, this project wouldn’t have been possible without Mike Montgomery, Michele Swofford and Sparta High School.  Without them, it would have been very hard to find all the yearbooks and get the project done in a reasonable amount of time.  Thank-you to them and to the school for keeping a good record of all the yearbooks in one place.  With that, I hope you enjoy what’s below.  Please leave a comment if you have any questions or contact me at derek.montgomery@gmail.com.  Thanks!
