Not much has changed since Sparta won 60-18 a year ago against Aquinas. The Spartans continued their dominance of La Crosse schools with a 61-15 victory at Aquinas Thursday evening. Spartan wrestlers picked up six wins by pin including five in the first 80 seconds of the match. Jaden Winchel picked up the other pin in 3:01. Brett VonRuden returned the lineup and took care of business with the fastest pin of the nigh in 1:03 against Aquinas’ Andrew Topolski.
Kyle Erickson and David Hayes picked up victories by decision while Noah Benish, Blake Brooks and Jon Bailey all won by forfeit. At 195 pounds, Austin Zwiefel pushed Aquinas’ best wrestler on paper to overtime before falling 9-7.
It was a dominant effort by the Spartans and it took the Blugolds until the 10th match to put points on the scoreboard. Sparta would rebound from that with consecutive pins to win their 11th dual in a row against Aquinas.
