Spartans open up season with 52-15 loss to Marshfield

The Spartan wrestling team opened up the season with a 52-15 loss to what projects to be a highly-ranked Marshfield team.  The Tigers racked up six straight victories to open up a 30-0 lead before Madden Connelly broke through for the Spartans at 195 with a first period pin.  Marshfield would win four of the next six matches to close out the dual.  In addition to Connelly, Noah Benish won by first period pin at 285 while Jon Bailey won his match at 126 by a 6-3 score.

Bailey’s match at 126 was the highlight of the night pitting two state tournament qualifiers against each other.  Bailey opened up the scoring and never gave up the lead en route to the 6-3 victory of wrestlers who will likely be ranked pretty when Wisconsin Wrestling Online debuts their individual rankings in the next couple weeks.

Five of Marshfield’s wrestlers finished the season ranked last year.  Pugh finished as the 8th ranked wrestler at 113 pounds, Kanable was 14th at 126, Hertel 6th at 145, Schwanebeck-Ostermann 5th at 170 and Mitchell 4th at 182.

It was a tough night for the Spartans and numbers will be a challenge this year, but the guys who do show up will put up quality matches.  Here are full results from yesterday evening’s dual…
