It wasn’t the streak of first period pins en route to the finals we were used to seeing from Winchel, but he still rampaged through his bracket. His first two matches ended by pin in 3:27 and 3:29 before an 8-2 semifinal victory and his 8-3 victory in the finals over the 3rd-ranked wrestler at 145 pounds in division two.
Joining Winchel in the finals, but finishing second were Blake Brooks and Jon Bailey. The Spartans were without Hayden Krein as he recovered from an injury, but they traded one Krein for another as Mathias Krein stepped in and went 4-1 on the day en route to a 6th place finish. Krein would have had a chance for 5th place, but rules dictate that athletes can only wrestle five times in one day and the 5th place match would have been Krein’s 6th match.
At 106 pounds, Blake Brooks was dominant in his first two matches with a first period pin in the quarterfinals followed by a 10-0 major decision victory in the semis. In the finals, Brooks fell 6-2 to D1 106-pound 7th-ranked Caden Fry of Reedsburg. Two weight classes up at 120 pounds, Jon Bailey fell to Iowa-Grant/Highland’s Sawyer Sarbacker for the second time this season–this time by a 5-2 score. The top-ranked wrestler in D3 at 120 pounds also defeated Bailey 5-3 earlier this season in the finals of the Lancaster Invite.
