Spartans 7-0 after defeating Caledonia, La Crescent

Mathias Krein is 6-1 at 160 since stepping in for his brother Hayden who is recovering from an injury.

Sparta improved to 7-0 on the year with a victory over La Crescent and another win over a quality Caledonia team.  The Spartans had never met Caledonia in a dual and were 0-3 all-time against La Crescent.  That all changed with Sparta’s 39-31 victory over Minnesota Class A honorable mention Caledonia and a 59-13 victory over La Crescent.

The match with Caledonia was probably not as close as the score indicated.  Brett Von Ruden was disqualified for a questionable slam in a match he was likely to win, which would have been at least a nine-point swing.  Mathias Krein stepped in for his brother Hayden as he continued to recover from an injury and picked up six points for the Spartans with a first period pin.

All in all, the Spartans won seven matches against Caledonia–all via pin, technical fall, major decision or forfeit to ensure the victory.  Caledonia brought some tough wrestlers to the competition.  At 132 pounds, Minnesota Class A 3rd-ranked Kyle Cavanaugh picked up a 9-1 major decision victory over Kyle Erickson and at 138 pounds 3rd-ranked (145) Zach Schneider defeated David Hayes 7-2.

It was a solid victory for the Spartans even though they had an incomplete team and some questionable calls go against them.

The other dual of the night against La Crescent was a little smoother sailing.  Sparta improved to 1-3 all-time against La Crescent by winning 11 of 14 matches including four by pin and four by forfeit.

Vince Polhamus moved up a weight class to 113 to earn a first period pin for the Spartans while Joe Lopez stepped in at 152 pounds to register a first period pin.  Also earning pins for the Spartans were Jaden Winchel and Matt Fahning.
