Spartans dominate Aquinas in MVC opener

Senior Kyle Erickson made his varsity debut with a first period pin against Aquinas.

Aquinas held the briefest of leads Thursday night before the Spartans came roaring back on their way to a 56-15 victory over Aquinas.  On the night, the Spartans won 10 of 14 matches including six by pin and another by technical fall.  It was the 13th straight win for the Spartans in the series.  Sparta is now 25-4 all-time against Aquinas.

Things started out in Aquinas’ favor as the Blugolds’ Albert Flottmeyer caught sophomore Thomas Treu in the second period in a fluky pin.  That gave the Blugolds a brief lead as Kyle Erickson made his varsity debut by picking up a pin in 1:03.  That was followed by a David Hayes pin in 31 seconds to give the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish.

Sparta would add 18 more team points by the way of a forfeit to Von Ruden at 152 and second period pins by both Hayden and Mathias Krein at 160 and 170.  Kelten Pfaff followed up the Krein pin parade with a 12-6 decision that put the Spartans up 33-6 at the halfway point.  Aquinas would get back nine points with a pin at 195 and a close 4-3 victory by Jack Horihan over Garet Pfaff.  Last year, Horihan edged Pfaff in Sparta’s dual against Aquinas by a similarly close 5-4 margin.

Noah Benish stopped the streak of Aquinas wins with a pin at 285 before Luis Cruz-Cane won by forfeit at 106.  At 113, both teams forfeitted.  Vince Polhamus and Jon Bailey finished off the dual with a first period pin by Polhamus and technical fall victory in just 2:29 by the junior Jon Bailey.
