Sparta opened up the MVC season with a solid 38-21 defeat of Holmen. On the night, Sparta took eight matches on the night to Holmen’s six, but the difference came in how Sparta picked up those wins. Of the Spartans’ eight victories, six were by pin or major decision. On the other hand, only one of Holmen’s six victories came by something other than a 3-point decision.
Even in many of Sparta’s losses, the matches were close. One match was lost in overtime. Steven Stevenson was up 4-0 before getting pinned and three other Spartan losses were by three points or less. On a brighter note, Spartan sophomore Brandon Rickert made a splash in his debut racking up eight takedowns en route to an 18-6 victory at 119 pounds.
