Sparta 2nd at Sparta Invite, McDonald and Hutson Champs

Sparta wrestled tough over the weekend to place 2nd at their own invitational.  Sparta scored 179.5 points to fall 12.5 back of Neillsville’s 192 points.  Sparta’s Derek McDonald and Trevor Hutson took home individual titles while Mike Jacobsen made the finals at 160 but fell hard to Neillsville’s Cody Friemoth.

Saturday’s invite featured three wrestlers who ranked at the top of their weight class according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online, five who ranked second, one who was third and another four who were rated fourth in their class.  Auburndale, ranked 5th in Division 3, finished a distant 8th with 93 points.  The Apaches didn’t bring any wrestlers for the 215 and 285 weight classes and were run over at a number of other weights revealing just how deep Saturday’s tournament was.

Sparta’s Derek McDonald recorded four pins in four matches on his way to grabbing the title at 112 pounds.  His four pins led all wrestlers at the tournament.  While we are on the topic of pins, here are some more pin-related facts from the Spartan Invite.  Neillsville led all teams with 14 pins followed by Hortonville and Sparta at 12 pins apiece.

Sparta wrestles next against Onalaska on Thursday.  It will also be Senior Night and will mark ex-coach Lyle Blum’s first trip back to Sparta as the new head coach at Onalaska.  The JV kicks off at 615pm while the Varsity takes the mat at 730pm.

After that comes the dual with Tomah on Tuesday, January 29th.  Check back this week for a weight-by-weight scouting report on Tomah.
