Ryan Wisniewski was among five Spartan wrestlers to go 5-0 on the day. The others were John Roddick, Jaden Winchel, Brett Von Ruden and Brock Polhamus.

Only nine Spartan wrestlers traveled to Stevens Point this past weekend, but they made the absolute most of their time on the mat.  Sparta went 4-1 on the day and finished third at a tournament that has often given them fits.  The day saw dominant victories over Shawano and Kimberly and in the third place match, the Spartans finally defeated Baraboo.  The Thunderbirds had claimed two straight against Sparta by scores of 37-34 last year and 40-33 during the 2012-13 season.  In over 50 years of wrestling, this was just the 10th victory against Baraboo for Sparta.

Against the host Stevens Point, a number of one-point losses were the difference in a 36-27 loss.  That should be nothing new for the Spartans against Stevens Point.  Sparta has wrestled the Panthers each of the last three seasons with close scores in each of those duals.  Sparta lost by one during the 2012-13 season and won by one last season.

On the day, the Spartans were dominant when they wrestled.  Overall, they were 38-7 with four of those losses coming by one point.  Sparta did not register a single major decision or technical fall victory on the day, but they did earn 24 pins.  With regular forfeits at 120, 152, 195, 220 and 285, the Spartans had to generate bonus points whenever they could and that’s just what they did.  Spartan wrestlers also won three matches by three points or less.  On a day when Sparta had just nine guys competing, each Spartan on the mat did their job to pick up bonus points and avoid surrendering them.

Individually, John Roddick, Jaden Winchel, Brett VonRuden, Brock Polhamus and Logan Van Tassel were 5-0.  David Hayes and Ryan Wisniewski were 4-1, Corey Zimmerman 3-2 and Walker Polhamus 2-3.  Brock Polhamus had a pair of big victories over ranked wrestlers.  In the dual against Baraboo, he defeated Zach Raymond 5-2.  Raymond is an honorable mention in D1 at 152.  Against Stevens Point, Polhamus won another 5-2 decision against Dakota Kelz who entered the match ranked 8th in D1 at 152 pounds.
