Looking back at Stevens Point

Better late than never, right?  Here are some interesting tidbits from the Stevens Point tournament…

  • Sparta won the title despite forfeiting three matches in every dual.  That’s impressive.
  • Jaden Winchel was nearly untouchable with four pins and a major decision in his five matches
  • Joining Winchel in the 5-0 club was John Roddick, Brock Polhamus and Logan Degenhardt
  • In the dual against Appleton West, Sparta won all nine matches where there was actual wrestling.  In those matches, they picked up eight pins and a technical fall victory
  • Brock Polhamus defeated Stevens Point’s Fritz Schierl 4-3.  Schierl is currently ranked 2nd in D1 at 138 pounds.
  • Sparta’s one point victory over Stevens Point meant Jaden Winchel’s major decision victory and Logan Degenhardt’s pin were absolutely crucial in picking up the win in that dual.  They each could have picked up a simple three points, but that would have meant a tie or loss for the Spartans.
  • Lucas Peters’ 5-4 loss to Ben Goodreau in the Baraboo dual goes to show how razor-thin the Spartan’s margin for winning duals is this year.  One point meant the difference between a win and a loss for Sparta.  It didn’t help either that Sparta had to forfeit three matches and the loss wasn’t entirely on Peters’ back.  Everyone shares a responsibility to pick up bonus points and avoid them in losses.
  • In the dual against Baraboo, Sparta picked up three  pins in a total of 102 seconds or one minute, 42 seconds.  John Roddick was the fastest with a 24 second pin followed by Jaden Winchel at 50 seconds then Brock Polhamus with 28 seconds.

This wasn’t a regular dual tournament.  There were four-team brackets and everyone wrestled everyone in a round-robin format.  The scores from the individual matches of the robin-round were tallied to score the duals.  With that, there is an air of suspense hanging over the tournament as it’s hard to know the exact score of each dual until the very end.  That just means each match could be the difference-maker and you just don’t know it.
