The Sparta Spartan wrestling team is back in the wrestling room and ready for the upcoming season. A well-balanced team led by seniors Adam Simpson, Michael Jacobsen and Trevor Hutson look to bring a fifth MVC title back to Sparta. While it will be difficult to replace the almost 100 wins that the departed Jeff Dolan and Jared Rickert contributed, an additional year of experience, talented freshman and other new additions to the team promise to solidify any gaps the departure of last year’s seniors left.
Continue to check back here in the upcoming weeks. Unfortunately this year there won’t be as many photo galleries because I have this thing called a job and it makes it impossible to drive the 3.5 hours between Duluth, MN and Sparta for every match. However, I will be back for a tournament or two and for the dual meet against Tomah and possibly the one against Holmen. We are also going to try to add video clips of some of the matches to the website this year so continue to check back for that as the season goes on.
Speaking of video, this post will include the first ever clip on Spartanwrestling.com. New Spartan head coach Bill Tourdot and assistant coach Jake Larsen got to participate in a game called Cowboy Poker. I’ll leave all the explaining there, but check out the Youtube video below to get a glimpse. We are happy to say that Tourdot came out victorious. Hopefully that is a sign of things to come this year.
Enjoy the video and be sure to keep checking back for updates. The first match of the year is December 1st at the Reedsburg Invite. Oh and Tourdot is the one wearing the red hat in the video while Larsen is the guy whose chair is taken out right away.
Hats off to Bill and Jake for competing in the Cowboy Poker. They competed as a way to benefit the Sparta Wrestling program and maybe for some bragging rights as well! The winner won a hundred dollars plus an additional hundred dollars was donated by Sam Polhamus to the Wrestling club.
I am willing to bet that Jake will be looking for a rematch come next year !!!
