Hortonville wins 34th Spartan Invite, Sparta 3rd

Dolan_1

In what proved to be one of the strongest fields ever to come to the Spartan Invitational, Hortonville won the team title with 196 which bested 2nd place Neilsville’s 182 points.  Sparta finished in 3rd with 150 points edging out Marshfield by 0.5 points.

The invite featured multiple Bi-State champions, state qualifiers, placewinners and even more conference champions.  The depth was so deep at some weights that individual wrestlers were seeded lower than their places at the 54-team Bi-State Classic.  Spartan Jeff Dolan was one of these individuals.  Dolan, who placed 5th at Bi-State was seeded 6th at the Spartan Invite.

However, Dolan proved seeding means little as he literally dominated the competition from start to finish.  His opening match was a 0:47 pin followed by a 16-6 major decision.  Dolan continued his dominating ways earning a 11-3 major decision before facing Bi-State champion and West-Salem Bangor’s Craig Meyers.  Dolan breezed to an easy 9-5 victory that was closer than the final score showed after Meyers scored points in the final seconds.  Dolan’s great wrestling didn’t go unrecognized as he earned the Invitational’s Most Valuable Wrestler award.

Outside of Dolan, the Spartans had mixed success, but many placewinners.  Jared Rickert’s undefeated season came to an end in what was one of the most exciting matches of the day.  Rickert had an easy time on his way to the finals, but so did Neilsville’s Cody Friemoth.  The two met in the finals with Rickert garnering a 31-0 record and Friemoth a 28-0 record.  Friemoth decisioned Rickert the previous year 11-2 at 135 pounds, but this year would prove to be much different.

Late in the third period Friemoth held a 3-1 lead but Rickert was able to grab a takedown with about 30 seconds to go and held on to force overtime.  In overtime, Rickert threw Friemoth to his back and almost held on for the takedown before being turned and pinned in 6:34.  The turn by Friemoth was virtually a desperation move as Rickert was about as close as you could get to earning a takedown and back points.

Below are the complete results for the Spartans:

103 – Derek McDonald, 6th place, 3-2 with 2 pins and a major decision
112 – Adam Simpson, 4th place, 2-2
119 – Kenny Denton, Did Not Place, 1-2 with a major decision
125 – Jenna Ahnen, Did Not Place, 2-2
130 – Matt Tourdot, 3rd Place, 3-1 with one pin and a major decision
135 – Jordan Stanek, Did Not Place, 0-2
140 – Colin Burns-Gilbert, 5th Place, 4-1 with a technical fall and a major decision
145 – Jared Rickert, 2nd Place, 3-1 with three pins
152 – Jeff Dolan, 1st Place, 4-0 with a pin and two major decisions
160 – Seth Harelson, Did Not Place, 0-2
171 – Michael Jacobsen, 4th Place, 2-2 with one technical fall
189 – Trevor Hutson, Did Not Place, 2-2 with two pins
215 – Quincy Degenhardt, 4th Place, 2-2 with a pin
285 – Kevin Schmitz, Did Not Place, 2-2 with a pin

And that’s it!  The tournament was a good primer for the next month at Sparta.  Two weekends from now the MVC/Coulee Tournament comes to Sparta followed by Regionals the next week.  In the meantime, check back here tomorrow and the day after for some photos from Bi-State, the Logan Dual, the Spartan Invite and some old time photos from the 1970s and the first ever Spartan Invitational.
