Hayes, Von Ruden lead Sparta to 2nd place finish in Lancaster

David Hayes became the 26th wrestler in program history to record 100 or more victories.

Recording the 100th victory of his career, David Hayes joined Brett Von Ruden as champions at Saturday’s Lancaster Invite to lead the Spartans to a second place finish behind hosts Lancaster.

Hayes and Von Ruden were joined in the finals by Vince Polhamus, Hayden Krein and Mathias Krein who all placed second. Thomas Treu and Kyle Erickson finished third while Kelten Pfaff and Garet Pfaff placed fourth.

The Spartans placed second despite wrestling without a 106-pounder and without Jon Bailey at 120. At 160, Hayden Krein ran into Spartan nemesis and 2017 Bi-State champion Max Maylor of Iowa-Grant/Highland. Maylor defeated Von Ruden multiple times in close matches last year and now can add a victory over Krein to his resume of Spartan distress. A rematch of these two could happen in a couple weeks at the Sparta Invite. Krein is ranked second in D1 at 160 while Maylor is ranked second in D3 at the same weight.

At 145, David Hayes won his first two matches by first period pin before handing Dubuque Senior’s Matt Connolly (21-2) his second loss of the season via a 4-3 victory in the championship match. In the process, Hayes became the 26th Spartan in program history to record 100 or more victories. Three other wrestlers on this year’s team belong to that club–junior Jon Bailey and seniors Brett Von Ruden and Hayden Krein. At 152, it was easy sailing for Von Ruden as he picked up three pins in three matches including a pin in 1:17 in the championship match over Iowa-Grant/Highland’s Clayton Kite.

Sophomore Thomas Treu picked up the most wins on the day with four. The 132-pounder won his first match before losing his second, but battled back with three straight victories to capture third.

Corbin Hauser leads JV at Wisconsin Challenge Series in Mineral Point

Corbin Hauser was dominant at 152 pounds picking up three pins on his way to a first place finish at the Wisconsin Challenge Series qualifier in Mineral Point. The top three finishes at the Mineral Point regional will advance to the Wisconsin Challenge Series Final at Wausau West on January 20th. That means Madden Connelly will join Hauser in Wausau on the 20th.
