Spartan freshman and 113-pounder Jonathan Bailey was Sparta’s lone champion at the Battle on the Bay this past weekend. Bailey went 5-0 on the day with a 7-3 win over River Valley’s Zach Licht in the semifinals. Licht finished last season 47-10 and was a state qualifier. In the finals, Bailey defeated Luxemburg-Casco’s Nathan Ronsman 4-1.
Also advancing to the finals, but coming up just short in each match was Jaden Winchel at 145 pounds and Hayden Krein at 152 pounds. Winchel lost his first high school season match since the state quarterfinals his freshman season. And he lost to one of the best to ever wrestle in the state. Amery’s Hunter Marko, a Minnesota recruit and three-time state champion, defeated Winchel 11-6 while accumulating seven points off back points from tilts. Marko is a beast on top and able to use his tilts to quickly accumulate back points as John Roddick can attest after last year’s state semifinal match.
At 152 pounds, Hayden Krein fell in the finals to Oconto Falls’ Nate Trepanier. Trepanier finished 3rd last season at 145 pounds in D2 as a freshman. In the quarterfinals at last year’s tournament, Brock Polhamus defeated Trepanier 2-1 before losing to him 4-2 in the third place match. And like Polhamus’ close matches with Trepanier last year, this one was even closer. Trepanier edged Krein 7-5 in sudden victory overtime.
At 138 pounds, Brett VonRuden finished third going 4-1 on the day and only losing to Mukwonago’s Nathan Smith–a state champion last year in division one at 120 pounds and third place finisher the year before. In last year’s finals match, Smith defeated La Crosse Central’s Jaden Van Maanen 6-3. VonRuden pushed Smith to the end, but ultimately fell 11-9.
Anytime you lose, it’s not fun, but the losses by Winchel, Krein and VonRuden show that they can wrestle with the best in division one, which can be a step up from division two in terms of competition at the individual level.
Also placing for the Spartans were Sam Forbes in 14th, David Hayes in 8th, Christian Lamon in 7th, Matt Fahning in 16th, James Gann in 19th, Brady Hanson in 15th and Austin Zweifel in 14th. Sparta is still without Ryan Wisniewski in the upper weights as he continues to work his way back from an injury. Sparta did not have wrestlers at 106, 220 and 285.
