Forfeits, bonus points power Spartans past Weston/Ithaca

Sparta used four forfeits, three pins, a technical fall and a major decision to power their way past Weston/Ithaca 51-23 in Ithaca.  The Spartans have never lost to Weston/Ithaca and this year’s defeat was of the eighth-ranked team in division three.  Last year, the Spartans defeated Weston/Ithaca 41-29.  The 51-23 score was one of the more lopsided victories by the Spartans in a growing rivalry that the Spartans have yet to lose a dual in.  Let’s see how the Spartans did on an individual basis…

220  –  Wyatt Gundlach (Weston/Ithaca) pinned Devon Smith in 1:59
285  –  Logan Degenhardt pinned Ossian Sharp (Weston/Ithaca) in 3:06
106  –  Sam Forbes won by forfeit
113  –  Hunter Dischler (Weston/Ithaca) pinned Corey Zimmerman in 5:20
120  –  Zak Marcellus won by forfeit
126  –  John Roddick won by technical fall over Jordan Rupp (Weston/Ithaca) 15-0
132  –  Stetson Clary (Weston/Ithaca) pinned Jaden Winchel in 3:16
138  –  Austin Feltner won by forfeit
145  –  Brock Polhamus won by major decision over Nick Bennett (Weston/Ithaca) 12-0
152  –  Hayden Bernett pinned Frank Tomczak (Weston/Ithaca) in 1:52
160  –  Logan VanTassel pinned Dustin Aspenson (Weston/Ithaca) in 1:00
170  –  Mason McCauley (Weston/Ithaca) won by technical fall over Walker Polhamus 16-1
182  –  Ben Stidham won by forfeit
195  –  DOUBLE FORFEIT
SPARTA 51  –  WESTON/ITHACA 23

The Spartan were wrestling without state runner-up Dylan Winchel who is due to return next week.  Returning state qualifiers John Roddick and Brock Polhamus showed they will again be forces to reckon with as each did not allow their opponents to score.  Freshman Jaden Winchel wrestled a tough match against state qualifier Stetson Clary and was leading until the final seconds of the first quarter when he was caught in a five point move to end the period at 8-5 in favor of Clary.  The sophomore from Weston/Ithaca then caught Winchel in the second period to win by pin.  While the outcome was not what Winchel wanted, he showed he will be able to hang with the area’s best wrestlers.

The Spartans take a few days off before heading to Ellsworth on Saturday for their first tournament of the year at the Ellsworth Invitational.  Then they return on Thursday to open the MVC season by hosting Logan.  We will be live streaming that dual here on Spartanwrestling.com.  More details to come about that.
