Bailey, Krein lead Spartans to 7th Place finish in D1

Bailey lead the Spartans with a third place finish.

Jon Bailey and Hayden Krein lead the Spartans to a seventh place finish in division one and 15th overall at the 2017 edition of the Bi-State Classic.  Junior Jon Bailey and senior Hayden Krein fell just short of defending their Bi-State titles from last year with Bailey falling 4-3 in the semifinals to two-time MN Class A state champion Jeron Matson of Kenyon-Wanamingo.  At 160 pounds, Hayden Krein fell in the semis to Caledonia/Houston’s Zach Schneider.

David Hayes and Mathias Krein rounded out the placewinners for the Spartans with each finishing 9th.  At 152 pounds, Brett Von Ruden advanced to the semifinals and was in a tight match before questionable officiating lead to a disqualification.  Von Ruden finished the tournament 3-1 with three pins

While Bailey and Krein may have finished with the highest place, nobody on the team came close to David Hayes in number of matches won over the course of the tournament.  He came close to matching Kevin Dutton’s program record of nine wins in a single tournament, but ultimately went 7-2 over the two-day tournament.  In the early 1990s, Kevin Dutton lost his opening match of the tournament and won his next nine matches to place third and finish 9-1 over two days.  Hayes went 7-2.

As is usual with Jon Bailey, he was able to win a lot of close matches.  Wrestling for the first time this season at 120 pounds, Bailey won two of this final three matches with all three being decided by two points or less.  His semifinal loss was a 4-3 decision, while his consolation semifinal match was a 3-1 victory before winning 3-1 in sudden victory-one overtime in the third place match.

Significant wins during the tournament included…

  • Jon Bailey’s 8-0 victory over Melrose-Mindoro/G.E.T.’s Jack Marley (ranked 5th in D3 at 120)
  • Jon Bailey’s 3-1 victory over Belmont/Platteville’s Isaac Wiegel (ranked 2nd in D2 at 120)
  • Jon Bailey’s 3-1 SV-1 victory over Lodi’s Garrett Moll (ranked 4th in D2 at 126)
  • Brett Von Ruden’s pin in 1:31 over Prairie du Chien’s Tyler Smock (HM at 152 in D2)
  • Hayden Krein’s pin in 3:03 over Weston/Ithaca’s Colton Clary (ranked 8th in D3 at 170)
  • Hayden Krein’s 16-0 technical fall victory in 3:40 over New Lisbon’s Gunnar Pederson (ranked 9th in D3 at 152)
  • Hayden Krein’s 17-2 technical fall victory in 1:13 over Waunakee’s Ben Statz (HM at 170 in D1)
  • Hayden Krein’s 4-2 victory over Medford Area’s Kolten Hanson (ranked 2nd at 170 in D2)
  • Mathias Krein’s 8-4 victory over Luxemburg-Casco’s Jacon Zellner (HM at 170 in D2)
  • Mathias Krein’s 7-2 victory over Lodi’s Max Barreau (ranked 10th at 182 in D2)

Sparta’s finish was significant for a number of reasons.  The team is far from full-strength or healthy and the Spartans wrestled without anyone at 106.  Von Ruden’s questionable disqualification erased all of his team points meaning the Spartans might have finished even higher than 7th in D1 and 15th overall in the 61-team tournament.  At the same time, Bailey and Hayden Krein were incredibly close to winning the matches they lost, which could have meant more team points.

Meanwhile, Holmen dominated the team scores with 342 points, which was 22.5 points better than second-place Stratford.  The Vikings appear to be the real deal and are earning their top ranking in Wisconsin division one.  Area teams that also finished strong included Prairie du Chien (9th overall with 172.5 point), Viroqua (17th overall with 132.5 points) and Melrose-Mindoro/G.E.T. (18th overall with 126 points)
