Spartan eighth grader Jon Bailey continues to accumulate wins all over the country weeks after Sparta’s middle school season ended.  Bailey went 9-1 over the weekend at the AWCA National Middle School Duals in Wildwood, New Jersey.  The Atlantic Coast Wrestling website says of the tournament:  “Almost 1200 of the best grade school wrestlers in the country will once again be coming to the Wildwoods Convention Center with their teams to battle for a team championship in two separate age groups: Elementary School and Middle School.”

Bailey competed with Team Ohio.  I know you might be confused because Jon goes to school in Wisconsin, but was wrestling for Team Ohio.  Jon and his family have some connections in Ohio that got him onto an all-star team there back in 2013.  He joined them again this year for this tournament and had a very solid weekend.  Let’s look at how he did on the weekend.

  • Jon Bailey (Team Ohio) wins by forfeit
  • Jon Bailey (Team Ohio) defeats Joe Murray (Bandits) 14-2
  • Jon Bailey (Team Ohio) defeated Matthew Galasso (X-Calibur) 3-2
  • Jon Bailey (Team Ohio) pinned Christian Minto (Charlotte Gold Florida) in 1:04
  • Luke Nichter (SEPA Blue MS) defeated Jon Bailey (Team Ohio) 5-3
  • Jon Bailey (Team Ohio) defeated Cole Potts (Minion Black) 7-0
  • Jon Bailey (Team Ohio)defeated Paul Watkins (Minion Green) 7-2
  • Jon Bailey (Team Ohio) defeated Nick Bennett (NJ South) 8-2
  • Jon Bailey (Team Ohio) won by major decision against JT Davis (NJ Scorpions Desire MS) 9-1
  • Jon Bailey (Team Ohio) defeated Paul Calo (Beast Training) 2-0

Bailey’s team finished third overall.  They defeated a team from New England 70-3, Charlotte Gold Florida 73-15, SEPA Blue MS 73-9, Minion Green 60-0, NJ South 53-6, NJ Scorpions Desire MS 41-7 and Beast Training 66-6.  In other words, they dominated their pool competition.  They then defeated the Bandits 65-13 to advance to the championship bracket.  In the third place match, they defeated Minion Black 52-21.

A lot of these teams probably don’t mean anything to people from Sparta, but look at the scores they defeated their competition by.  That should mean something.  Bailey is competing with a really good group of wrestlers, which can only benefit himself and later, the Spartan wrestling program.  Later this summer, Jon will join Team Ohio again for eight weeks of wrestling and competition before coming back to Sparta.

Congrats to Jon on a great tournament and continued success!!
