According to the 1974-75 yearbook…
The 1974-75 Sparta Wrestling team became more popular this year even though they did not have a verysuccessful season. After many hours of strenuous practices the Spartans started the season on Nov. 22 with a win over Black River Falls. The Spartans ended the season with a 7-8-1 record. The following individuals wrestledhard at the Sparta Invitational and won these places: J. Alexander 2nd, R. Brohmer 1st, R. Steinhoff 2nd, J. Ebert 2ndand G. Koehler 2nd. Greg also took 3rd at Regionals. D. Erickson placed 2nd at Regionals and qualified for theSectionals. The Spartan wrestlers ended the season with R. Brohmer having the most wins with 15; R. Steinhoffhaving most Takedowns with 32; J. Ebert having most reversals with 22; and J. Alexander, R. Brohmer,R. Steinhoff and G. Koehler who all had six pins. The team’s goal was to win ten dual matches but their failureto win several close matches prevented them from doing this. The Most Valuable Wrestler award went to Sr.Capt. R. Brohmer.

This was the season where we began to turn Sparta Wrestling into a competitive program. It was an unfortunate year of season ending injuries to ( Joe Jackson, Dick Kimpel & Scott Vieth – all varsity wrestlers w/ winning records the year before ) we could have easily been 12-4. We had a great 2nd place finish with five wrestlers in the finals at the first Sparta Invitational. A tournament now over 35 years old. Though our coaches worked us very hard they didn’t have the wrestling experience, i.e. a Mike Montgomery, Scott Zurfluh, Lyle Blume, Bill Tourdot and Jake Larson. As a wrestling alumnist, I couldn’t be prouder of the program. I would like to thank all the wrestlers & coaches past and present who made Sparta Wrestling what it is today!
