Matt Tourdot had an impressive day wrestling unattached for Old Dominion yesterday at the 30th annual Pembroke Classic at the University of North Carolina Pembroke. Wrestling heavyweight for the Monarchs, Tourdot won seven of his eight matches en route to a third place finish. Wrestling unattached means that Old Dominion may plan on red-shirting Tourdot, which will allow him to wrestle while not using up a year of eligibility. He will be able to wrestle in open tournaments such as this one, but won’t be able to wrestle at regionals, nationals or any conference dual meet unless they want to sacrifice the red-shirt.
Tourdot lost his second match of the tournament 8-6 to Matt Wade of Newberry. After that, though, Tourdot rattled off seven straight victories including a 4-0 victory against Wade in the match to wrestle for third place. Tourdot won a combination of dominating and close matches on his way to going 7-1 on the day. Match-by-match results are below…
Match 1 – Tourdot defeats Marquis McKinnery (Dartmouth) by tech fall 18-1 in 4:30
Match 2 – Matt Wade (Newberry) defeats Tourdot 8-6
Match 3 – Tourdot defeats Matt Colter (Newberry) by pin in 0:35
Match 4 – Tourdot defeats Karim Mansour (Md.-Baltimore County) 9-0
Match 5 – Tourdot wins by forfeit over Khiry Reid (Campbell)
Match 6 – Tourdot defeats Chris Giddens (UNC-Pembroke) 2-0
Match 7 – Tourdot defeats Matt Wade (Newberry) 4-0
Match 8 – Tourdot defeats Corey Anderson (Newberry) 9-7

What a great accomplishment. Especially to come back and beat the Wade kid.
