The year-ending banquet was held last night at Club 16, which officially marked the end of the 2008-09 wrestling season. Unlike other years where individual honors such as Most Valuable Wrestler were dished out, this was not this case this year.
Here are some short statistical tidbits that you might find interesting…
Most Takedowns
- 97 – Morgan Leis
- 73 – Matt Tourdot
- 66 – Derek McDonald
Most Pins
- 18 – Derek McDonald
- 17 – Matt Tourdot
- 16 – Kevin Schmitz
With his victories at the sectional tournament, Derek McDonald cracked the 100-win mark and finished his career with 101 victories. Matt Tourdot also moved beyond 100 victories in his career and will enter his senior campaign with 109 career victories–44 short of Jared Rickert's record.
All-Conference
Junior Brandon Brueggen brought home Sparta's only first-team all-conference award taking the honor for his performance at 171 pounds. Taking home second-team all-conference honors were Adam Weidl, Derek McDonald, Toby Mosely, Morgan Leis, Matt Tourdot and Kevin Schmitz. Tourdot lost to Aquinas' Matthew Gordon 10-6 back on January 22nd to knock him down to the second team. Honorable mention honors went out to Tom Tourdot, Jordan Stanek and Aaron Freeman while the team sportsmanship award went to Nick Anderson. All in all, ten Spartan wrestlers out of 14 weight classes brought home all-conference honors.
Full records for those wrestling on varsity and some for the junior varsity will be posted here later this week. We plan on being more active as a website throughout the summer as we bring new features and additions to the website. Such additions will include profiles of Spartan wrestling alumni with the first profile being on 2006-07 graduate Jared Rickert, who is currently wrestling for the Minnesota Gophers.
Congratulations Spartans on a wonderful season! The team and it’s many individuals showed themselves through the entire season. We your fellow Spartans look forward in seeing the team wrestle next season. With the nucleus coming back next year, I expect Sparta to dismantle Tomah’s reign on MVC.
Hit the weights hard and wrestle as much freestyle and greco as possible. We look forward in seeing you all next year.
