Sparta won 10 of 14 matches including six by pin and four by forfeit to route La Crosse Central 60-17 Thursday evening in Sparta. Picking up pins for the Spartans were Jon Bailey, Hayden Krein, Matt Fahning, Austin Zwiefel, Vince Polhamus and Blake Brooks. Winning by forfeit were David Hayes, Jaden Winchel, Gabe Dearman and Jakob Larson.
The match of the night pitted Sparta’s Kyle Erickson against Central’s Jacob Obert. The match was close throughout with Obert coming away with a 7-6 victory despite not taking a single shot. Erickson was penalized a point for locked hands in this bout of evenly matched wrestlers.
At 152 pounds, D1 top-ranked 145-pounder Jaden Van Maanen moved up a weight class to wrestle D1 152-pound honorable mention Brett Von Ruden. It was all Van Maanen as he left Sparta with a 23-8 technical fall victory. At 182 pounds, D1 fourth-ranked Connor Williams made quick work of Sparta’s Jame Gann with a pin in 1:20. While Central’s top guys escaped with victories, Sparta’s ranked wrestlers did the same.
At 160 pounds, D1 top-ranked Hayden Krein pinned his opponent in 5:19. At 126 pounds, Jon Bailey wrestled up two weight classes from his tournament weight to pick up a pin in 3:31 over Todd Werner.

With the victory, Sparta improves to 5-0 on the year and 4-0 in the MVC. It was the 12th straight victory over La Crosse Central for the Spartans as they improve to 20-10 all-time against the Red Raiders. Sparta is off today before hosting the Sparta Invite tomorrow.
