Sparta comes out firing, dominates Logan 46-17

In the opening match of the night, La Crosse Logan’s Zak Welke got the Rangers off on the right foot with a major decision victory over Sparta’s Cody Olson.  That was about the only good thing that happened for Logan as Sparta won the next five matches to take a 24-4 lead heading into the 215 bout.  The Spartans would finish the day with four pins, three regular decisions, two major decisions and a tech fall to dominate a Logan squad that entered the night undefeated in conference action.

Key wins for the Spartans included an upset victory at 152 pounds where Jordan Stanek (5-8) defeated Cody Olson (8-6) and a dominating victory at 135 pounds by Spartan freshman Morgan Leis who took down the previously 12-3 Nick Wolfert by a score of 9-2.

Adam Simpson returned to action for the first time since December 1st and picked up a decision while Trevor Hutson and Mike Jacobsen both returned from injuries that kept them out of the Bi-State Classic to register dominating victories.  Matt Tourdot also picked up an impressive major decision over Logan’s Tyler Beeler.

====================

Derek McDonald managed to keep it close at 112 against Logan’s Billy Lorenz who entered the match with an 18-1 record.  This could be a great preview to some heated matchups at regionals and sectionals down the road.

The win puts Sparta’s dual record at 5-2 on the year and 3-0 in the MVC.  More importantly, it keeps Sparta on pace with Tomah who is also undefeated in conference.  The Jan. 29th dual at Tomah looms larger by the day.

Next up for the Spartans is the Hudson Dual Invitational on Saturday.  This will be the Spartans first trip to Hudson.  Some great teams will be participating in this invite.  Check back here later in the day for more information about this invite
