Saturday, December 19, 2009 — The middle school wrestling team had an outstanding tournament Saturday at Viroqua finished 2nd in the 14 team field. The team wrestled very well and looked impressive at many weights. The hard work they have put in during the season has paid off with a lot of improvement in all the wrestlers. The season will conclude Monday with a meet against Tomah and LaCrosse Logan at Meadowview. Wrestling should begin about 4:15 p.m. Tournament results are listed below.

Wednesday, December 16, 2009 — The middle school wrestlers competed at Onalaska Tuesday against West Salem and Onalaska. Although the team looked a little sluggish and not very crisp compared to their efforts Saturday at Marshfield, they ended the day with a 30-17 record with 15 pins. Haydn Bernett 3-0, John Roddick, 2-0, Brock Polhamus 2-0, Dillon Crocker 2-0, Patrick Daley 2-0, Nate Grimminger 1-0, Joe Benish 1-0, Bryce Benson 2-0, Triston Steinhoff 2-0, Logan Degenhardt 2-0 and Zach Denton 2-0 all had good days. Also winning matches were Randall Giraud 2-1, Dalton Hanson 2-1, Matt Hoffman 1-1, Trygve Zurfluh 1-1, Justin Marx 1-1, Josh Hesselberg 1-1, and Angelique Stark 1-1. This Saturday they head to to the Viroqua Tournament.
Sunday, December 13, 2009 — The Middle School grapplers completed a successful day at the Marshfield Tournament this past Saturday, December 12. The wrestlers went 33-23 on the day with 16 pins. Earning first place honors for the Spartans were: Matt Hoffman, Haydn Bernett, Corey Zimmerman, Justin Marx, John Roddick, Brock Polhamus, and Dillon Crocker. 2nd place finishers included: Trey Rickey, Trygve Zurfluh, Randall Giraud, and Logan Degenhardt. Finishing in 3rd place were: Nate Gremminger, Jacob Leverich, Dalton Hanson and Triston Steinhoff. The wrestlers will be back in action this coming Tuesday, December 15 at Onalaska then Saturday December 19 at the Viroqua Tournament. they will conclude their season with a home meet on Monday, December 21 beginning at 4:15 p.m.
Saturday, December 5, 2009 — The Sparta Middle School team competed in the Tomah Invitational and finished in 2nd place. The team scores were as follows: Holmen 144.5, Sparta 114, Tomah 105.5, LaCrosse Longfellow 60.5, and G.E.T. 41. Wednesday, December 2, 2009 — The Middle School wrestling team continues to wrestle very well as the season enters it’s busiest period. In a Nov. 24 meet at Westby the Spartans were 16-20 on the day against some very strong competition from Westby and Viroqua. This is a little deceiving as Viroqua and Westby are unable to match ability levels up due to their low numbers. Many of our wrestlers were paired against opponents with much more experience. Despite that fact, our wresters were very competitive and showed themselves well throughout the meet. Going 3-0 on the day was Bryce Benson, Trygve Zurfluh and Corey Zimmerman, Zach Denton went 2-0.
On Tuesday, Dec. 1 the Spartans traveled to G.E.T. for a meet that also included Onalaska. The Spartans dominated the meet going 36-19 with 21 pins. Because of the lower numbers at the other schools, Sparta was forced to wrestle each other in 10 of the matches. Having an outstanding day were: Trygve Zurfluh 3-0, Haydn Burnett 2-0, John Roddick 2-0, Brock Polhamus 2-0, Randall Giraud 2-0, Corey Zimmerman 3-0, Josh Hesselberg 3-0, Jacob Leverich 3-0, Patrick Daley 2-0, Dalton Hanson 2-0, and Zach Denton 3-0. Other outstanding individual efforts were turned in by Lucas Peters (alias LP) and Logan Degenhardt who both wrestled tough aggressive matches.
Sunday, November 22, 2009 — The Middle School wrestling season is off to a great start this year. Head coaches Mike Roddick and Scott Zurfluh along with assistant Mike Montgomery have 25 eager and enthusiastic young grapplers making up this year’s team.
This past Friday, the team went to Prairie du Chein to compete against 12 other teams from Wisconsin and Iowa. The Spartans won 36 of 52 matches wrestled and 23 of them by pins. 8 of the 18 wrestlers that competed won their brackets going 3-0. 5 more wrestlers went 2-1 and finished second or tied for first in their bracket.
Finishing I first place for Sparta were: John Roddick, Brock Polhamus, Trygve Zurfluh, Haydn Bernett, Corey Zimmerman, Dalton Hanson, Josh Hesselberg, Lucas Peters, and Zach Denton.
Second place finishers were: Joe Benish, Dillon Crocker, Randall Giraud, and Dylan Winchel.
Third place finishers: Trey Rickey, Logan Degenhardt, Jacob Leverich, and Angelique Stark.
The team will be in action again this upcoming Tuesday November 24th at Westby H.S. beginning at 4:30 p.m.
