Roddick surpasses 100 career wins, Winchel into top 10

roddick-winchel-1Spartan junior John Roddick surpassed 100 wins for his career last weekend at the Cheesehead.  Roddick’s 36 second pin of Kenyon-Wanamingo’s Matthew Houglum was victory number 100 and made him the 20th Spartan wrestler to reach 100 career victories.

The win puts Roddick in select company in the annals of Spartan wrestling lore.  He won one more match at Cheesehead and received a forfeit last night against Onalaska.  That means Roddick has 102 wins for his career, which would be good for 17th all-time in program history.  And he has a very good chance to do a lot of moving up that all-time list.  Within reach this year is Troy Lietzau’s 130 career victories, which would put Roddick at sixth all-time and on track to be the all-time wins leader should he stay healthy his senior year.

As a freshman, Roddick set a program record for wins in a freshman campaign finishing with a 40-15 record and a state tournament appearance.  He followed that up with a 42-12 sophomore season that included a third place finish at the state tournament.

Here are the 20 Spartans who have reached 100 victories in their career.

In addition to Roddick passing the 100-win mark, senior Dylan Winchel’s victory in last night’s dual moved him into 10th place all-time on the Spartan win list with 113 victories.  Winchel is currently 9-9 this season following a season where he finished second at state with a 27-5 record.  His sophomore season ended with a fifth place finish at the state tournament and a 48-6 record.  As a freshman, Winchel was 29-16.
