From the 1988 senior yearbook…

“This was a special year in Sparta wrestling, best marked by all the firsts that were experienced. The wrestlers won for the first time the conference dual and conference tournament and were third at the thirty-two team Bi-State competition. Sparta also won the regional and sectional championships. The wrestlers became the second team in Sparta history to gain a sectional title.” — Coach Scott Zurfluh
